Ordinarily Extraordinary

Printer Friendly Version

By Beverly S. Krueger

“Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites. ” Judges 6:14

I’ve always believed that ordinary people can do extraordinary things through the power of the Holy Spirit. I’ve seen it happen to some of the most common people in the world. We see people like that in the Bible. Moses didn’t start out by parting the Red Sea. He began as a man who didn’t feel adequate, a man with a stammering tongue. When the Lord told Gideon, “Go in this might of yours, and you shall save Israel from the hand of the Midianites” his response was to declare that he was the weakest member of the weakest tribe. When the Lord reaffirms his choice, Gideon still needs further assurances. They don’t seem like ordinary people on this side of history. They’re the giants of our faith and the doers of great deeds.

Doing extraordinary things for God is really rather simple. It begins with hearing the call of God to do one thing which may be something simple but which will seem enormous to us, something that someone else is probably far better equipped to do. There may be a time of dithering uncertainty and attempts to talk God out of making a serious mistake. Ultimately, there is obedience because when God asks us to do something, he also empowers us to do it. We often think of that in terms of gifts or skills…but the true empowerment comes from the power of His Spirit.

The man who leaves all behind to take the message of Christ to aborigines deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest has to have something more than woodcraft skills and a way with words. He has to be filled with a deep, deep unconditional love for those aborigines. That’s his source of power, the love of God that the Holy Spirit pours into him that is so life filled that it springs forth into action. If as the word says out of the overflow of a mans heart his mouth speaks, how more true is it that his actions also overflow from his heart.

Selfless, God directed actions flow out of a heart that is given over totally to God. God can take an ordinary man and turn him into a man who does extraordinary things. Filled with His Spirit and the power of His love such a man can live and even die for Christ.
