Homeschool Advice

Dear Helping Hand,

Can my child participate in football or track at a local public school if I home school them?

Answer:

Dear Jennifer,
The answer to your questions is that depends. It depends on whether the homeschoolers in your area have created their own sports teams and whether homeschoolers are allowed to participate on public school sports teams in your state. In Bellevue, Nebraska, where we used to homeschool, homeschoolers had the opportunity to play flag football, volleyball, basketball and track. Homeschoolers were not allowed to participate in public school athletics or with private schools that participated in leagues with the public schools. We now live in Nevada. Nevada passed a law allowing homeschoolers to participate on pubic school teams. Before that in the Reno area, there were no homeschool sports teams to act as an alternative. My daughter played for a small Christian school which had not yet entered the state 1A system, though they are heading in that direction.

Some states allow homeschoolers to participate in extra-curricular activities including sports. To learn more about sports in your area, contact your local support group or a state-wide support group. Your question has been asked before, so someone in the organization should know the answer specific to your state. Definitely ask homeschoolers first, because they will know whether it is legal or not. Not all coaches or school representatives will know and some may have misinformation particularly if they are opposed to homeschoolers participating on school teams.
